Ex. 20:4-5
I. THE IMAGE OF SELF
God’s jealousy is love in action. He refuses to share the human heart with any rival, not because He is selfish and wants us all for Himself, but because He knows that upon that loyalty to Him depends our very moral life… God is not jealous of us: He is jealous for us.” (Redpath)
A. Self begins with pride—Isa. 14:13, 14 (Rich fool, I, I, I,—no place for God)
What Is the Meaning of the Parable of the Rich Fool? It calls for the wisdom to( keep your priorities in the right place. Let your life be (rich and Christ centered ) because as you do this it will keep your heart in the right place. (Luke 12:13-21)
B. Self is a form of the flesh—Gal. 2:20 (Christ in me, no place for self)
To die to the law is to renounce it and to be freed from its dominion, so that we have no confidence in it and it does not hold us captive under the yoke of slavery.” (Calvin)
C. Self separates from God—Gal. 5:17 (Self and the flesh cannot please God)
To walk in the Spirit first means that the Holy Spirit lives in you. Second, it means to be open and sensitive to the influence of the Holy Spirit. Third, it means to pattern your life after the influence of the Holy Spirit.
When someone walks in the Spirit, they listen to what the Holy Spirit says as He guides us in the path and nature of Jesus.
And you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh: There is no way anyone can fulfill the lust of the flesh as they walk in the Spirit. The two simply don’t go together. The Holy Spirit doesn’t move in us to gratify our fallen desires and passions, but to teach us about Jesus and to guide us in the path of Jesus. This is the key to righteous living – walking in the Spirit, not living under the domination of the law.
